The $3.9 million Innisfail-Japoon Road intersection upgrade project is part of the Bruce Highway Safety Upgrade Package and is jointly funded by the state and federal governments.

A $447,000 upgrade to the River Avenue cycleway was carried out in conjunction with this project. The new intersection is expected to improve safety for road users with an upgrade of the intersection and installation of signalised right turn. The work also included drainage and pavement improvements at the McGowan Drive roundabout.
